Care and support, for all of our credential holders and their family, is a priority of our District. In keeping with this, it is the desire of the District to help credential holders with up to $500 per year per family (including dependents 18 years old and younger) for District-approved counselling within annual budgeting parameters. Claiming Reimbursement or Subsidy for Counselling

Credential holders seeking financial assistance for meeting with a District approved counsellor, as listed on this website, must:

  1. Pay for the counselling fee in full before leaving the counselling session.
    • As it is the desire of the District to ensure care and support for all credentials holders, if credential holders are experiencing financial hardship and are unable to pay for the counselling fee upfront, they may contact Darwin Pichette prior to the counselling session, at darwin@bcyd.ca or 778-808-0595 (text), to discuss alternate payment arrangements.
  2. Submit counselling invoices to their private or employee medical insurance provider, where applicable, until their annual coverage for clinical counselling per family member has been exhausted. Often this coverage would be up to $500 per person in the immediate family (including dependents 18 years old and younger or up to 25 years old if enrolled in post-secondary school and not married). Kechnie Benefits, the current District approved provider, is able to assist with up to $500 per person and only with District approved counselling, as found on this website.
    • If the private or employee medical insurance coverage is less than 100% (ie. 90%, 80%, etc.), the residual amount may be submitted to the District Office for subsidy through the the Subsidy Claim form found on the left tab of this page. This strictly confidential reimbursement would be a part of the $500 subsidy. The District is only able to assist with District approved counselling, as found on this website.
  3. After such private or employee insurance coverage has been exhausted for the calendar year or where such private or employee medical insurance coverage does not exist, submit the full amount to the District Office for subsidy through the the Subsidy Claim form found on the left tab of this page. This strictly confidential reimbursement would be a part of the $500 subsidy. The District is only able to assist with District approved counselling, as found on this website.

If it is not possible to submit counselling invoices electronically, please submit invoices by postal mail to the District Office at PAOC, 20411 Douglas Crescent, Langley, BC, V3A 4B6, attention to Darwin Pichette, where it will be handled in strict confidence.

If you are a counsellor and would like to apply to be included in our listings, please contact our office at info@bcyd.ca

Laura Chan Counselling
Over the past 20 years, Laura has worked within the healthcare field including non-profit, social services, senior healthcare, and volunteer Métis youth work, education, harm reduction, and mental health & wellness initiatives. Laura moved to the Sunshine Coast from Smithers, where she provided counselling services helping youth, young adults, couples, and families. Her own life experiences bring others to a place of empathy and understanding as she strives to hold a compassionate, non-judgmental counselling space. Her expertise ranges from addressing issues around anxiety, addiction, loneliness, depression, grief, and relationships, to name but a few. As an indigenous counsellor herself, she values a culturally sensitive trauma-informed, integrative approach to psychotherapy. Growing up in the traditional territory of the Witsuwit’en Nation, she has been blessed to have northern roots and Métis family surrounding her. As a counsellor, it is my goal to come alongside individuals who are experiencing a variety of interpersonal challenges, and to collaboratively develop strategies to meet their unique goals. My therapeutic framework is based in cognitive behavioural therapy, which is a structured, goal-focused form of therapy which helps people learn to identify, question, and change maladaptive thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours that contribute to their difficulties. ________________________________ Counselling approaches include: Gottman Couples Counselling level 2, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Satir Experiential Family Therapy, Non-directive Play Therapy
